State Flag of Louisiana

The name Louisiana has French origins as a tribute to King Louis XIV of France. The area was claimed by the French in 1692 and was
acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Louisiana was the 18th State to be admitted to the Constitution on April 30,1812.

  • Louisiana’s nickname is The Pelican State, the nickname pays tribute to the official state bird, “the brown pelican” which is native to
    Louisiana.
  • The state flower symbol is Magnolia, and the official State Song is “Give Me Louisiana” written by Doralice Fontane.
  • The state flag is a field of blue which shows the picture of a mother pelican feeding her young. The pelican symbolizes the state protecting its people. The white ribbon below displays the state motto “Union, Justice, and Confidence.”
  • The three largest cities in Louisiana are New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Shreveport.
  • The New Orleans Mardi Gras is an annual celebration that has origins dating to 1699.
  • The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is 24 miles long, making it the longest bridge over water in the world.
  • Louisiana is a southeastern U.S. State on the Gulf of Mexico. Its history as a melting pot of French, African, American and French-Canadian cultures is reflected in its Creole and Cajun cultures.
  • New Orleans is known for its colonial-era French Quarter, Mardi Gras festival, Jazz music, Renaissance-Style St. Louis Cathedral and wartime exhibits at the huge National WWII Museum.

Wildlife in Louisiana:
Coyotes, American Beavers, Muskrats, Swamp rabbits are the best-known mammals. The state’s best-known reptile is the American Alligator. There are also alligator snapping turtles, constrictors called Louisiana pine snakes, and venomous harlequin coral snakes. Southern toads, crawfish frogs, and Louisiana slimy salamanders are a few of the state’s amphibians.
